I had a copy of "Coney Island of the Mind" in high school. I think I may have memorized it, when I was supposed to be memorizing Hamlet.

A very good use of your academic career, Winter! (Although ‘Hamlet,’ of course, has many redeeming features.) But Ferlinghetti’s work is a usual corrective to the deliberately incomplete renderings of American history, governance and malpractice in the world.

Thanks for lifting this interview up! One of the favorite interviews I’ve ever done and I’ve done a lot. Love me Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s poetry and feisty soulfulness. (I travel with a book of poems he wrote as a twenty-something kicking about Paris, which I was delighted to discover on a shelf at the Third Mind BEAT bookshop in Ann Arbor, Michigan earlier this year.)

PS: Speaking of BEAT-ish stuff, I also had the fortune to interview Allen Ginsberg, plus get stoned with him around a bonfire in deepest West Virginia in 1983. But NOT to sleep with him. A topic about which I recorded and released a music video of a song called ‘I Never Slept With Allen Ginsberg’ in 2004, which is in the Ginsberg archives somewhere. More on the interview, the podcast, the joint and the music video at the link: https://westvirginiaville.substack.com/p/how-not-to-sleep-with-allen-ginsberg?utm_source=publication-search
